ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Annual General Meeting and the dinner to follow take place from 7.30 PM on Wednesday 29 March 2006. The venue is Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant, 64 Smith Street, Darwin. The cost is $30 per person for a three course meal. The restaurant is licensed but you can bring your own alcohol. Corkage is $3 per person. Nominations are called for the following positions: President; Vice-President; Honorary Secretary; Honorary Treasurer; Honorary Minutes Secretary; members of Council. Members can nominate themselves in writing to the Society's postal address before the meeting or can do so in person at the meeting. Nominations are welcome as there are currently vacancies on the Council. The meeting is usually short and the dinner most enjoyable. DAVID CARMENT After serving on the Historical Society Council continuously since 1982, David Carment, the current Honorary Secretary, is not seeking re-election. From early March he will be based in Sydney but he is retaining his position as Professor of History at Charles Darwin University on a 30% fractional basis and re-visiting Darwin once every three months for postgraduate supervision and research. Council member Yvonne Forrest has kindly agreed to take over compilation of the newsletter from the next issue. NEXT LECTURE The 2006 lecture series is on the history of sport and recreation in the Northern Territory. The first lecture is from 8.00 PM onWednesday 22 February 2006 in the theatre, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Bullocky Point. Matthew Stephen, a Society member and a PhD student in History at Charles Darwin University, discusses the role of sport and recreation in the Northern Territory before 1911. All interested persons are most welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served. JUDY BOLAND: DARWIN CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Warm congratulations go to the Society's Honorary Treasurer, Judy Boland, the winner of the Darwin Citizen of the Year Award for 2006. As an educator and through her community activities, Judy has made outstanding contributions over many years to the study and promotion of Northern Territory heritage and history. MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY OF THE NORTHERN TERRITORY The Historical Society thanks the Director of the Museum and Art Gallery for her continuing support through allowing the Society to use the theatre at Bullock Point without charge. This is very much appreciated. The theatre provides a really excellent venue for the lecture series. On show at the Museum until 12 March 2006 is the excellent The Policeman's Eye: The Photography of Paul Foelsche 1870s-1890s. The exhibition includes a remarkable series of images of Darwin as it took shape from the 1870s and portraits of Larrakia and Woolna people.
